Alfheim at Halliburton: – Styrke is the strongest oil union

The development of the oil and gas sector, the oil package, and securing stable jobs topped the agenda when Frode Alfheim, leader of Styrke, visited Halliburton in Stavanger. Alongside chief union representative Knut Nesland, Alfheim emphasized how Styrke has been crucial in safeguarding jobs and ensuring favorable conditions for the petroleum industry in Norway.

– We played a key role and were in daily contact with both the government and the opposition several times during the negotiations on the oil package. This effort helped keep the entire oil and gas industry afloat and set the stage for growth. I dare say that without Styrkes involvement, the agreement would not have been as successful as it turned out to be, Alfheim said.

He highlighted the constant need for both experienced and new workers in the oil and gas sector.

– We are now seeing many returning to the industry while also recruiting new talent. This is vital to securing current projects and ensuring future growth, said the union leader.

This was confirmed by Halliburton’s General Manager, Parijaat Sadanand Dixit, in a meeting with Alfheim and Nesland.

– We are actively hiring new employees. Next year will be our best year in a decade, he noted.

Nesland stressed that Styrke does more than just fight for wages and working conditions.

– Many people don’t realize how much we contribute to securing the framework conditions for the industry. The effects of the 2020 oil tax package illustrate how our work creates lasting jobs across the entire value chain, he said.

At the same time, the industry faces significant challenges in finding enough workers.

– Next year, especially in the second and third quarters, we don’t know how we will meet the demand. The need is enormous, he acknowledged.

Norway's best home insurance

As a member of our union, you have home, legal, and leisure accident insurance included in your
membership.

Frode Alfheim pointed out that a high union membership rate is crucial for achieving such victories and ensuring good wages and working conditions for all employees, regardless of their workplace.

– Our membership of over 80.000 gives us the strength to negotiate and secure better working conditions. This is what provides security in working life, he emphasized.

Chief union representative Knut Nesland, who has worked at Halliburton since 1985, supports this.

– I’ve been a union representative for nearly 30 years and understand the importance of solidarity. Whether you work in an office, offshore, or in a workshop, you need support when challenges arise, says Nesland.

– We’re seeing many returning to the industry while also recruiting new people. This is essential to ensuring both today’s projects and future growth, he said.
