Shaping the future of oil and transition: Key breakfast debate at Aker
On Wednesday, January 22, key figures from politics, industry, and labor unions will gather for an important breakfast debate at the GNIST building hosted by Aker BP and Aker Solutions.
With the theme “Petroleum – necessary resource or shame?”, participants will discuss the future of the oil sector, transition, and employment in a time marked by climate demands and heightened reputational scrutiny.
The panel includes:
- Minister of Energy Terje Aasland (Ap)
- Paal Eikeseth, Aker Solutions
- Kalle (Karl Johnny) Hersvik, CEO of Aker BP
- Tina Bru (H), fiscal policy spokesperson
- Frode Alfheim, leader of Forbundet Styrke
The debate moderator is Sofie Valdernes, union representative for Forbundet Styrke at Aker BP.

Oil and Transition – two sides of the same coin
Frode Alfheim, leader of Forbundet Styrke, emphasizes the importance of continuing to develop the oil sector – both to secure jobs and drive technological advancement.
– The oil industry has been the cornerstone of the Norwegian economy for decades and is crucial for future energy solutions. The expertise and technology we develop here may also be key to the green transition,”Alfheim says, stressing:
– Shutting down the industry before we have sustainable alternatives will cost us both jobs and our position as a global energy nation.

Importance for engineers and shipyards
Torstein Engevik, chief union representative for Forbundet Styrke at Aker Solutions, highlights that the oil sector is vital for the future of Norwegian engineering and shipyards.
– Without projects from the oil industry, work at our 6–8 offices and 4 shipyards along the coast, from Fornebu to Sandnessjøen, will come to a halt, he says, adding:
– These projects not only provide jobs but also build expertise needed to develop renewable technology. Balancing oil and green transition is crucial for the future of both shipyards and Norwegian industry, Engevik says.

Need for critical questions
The debate, starting at 9:00 AM, will address how the oil industry can balance employment and climate concerns, as well as how the sector can tackle challenges related to reputation and technological development. Breakfast will be served to attendees on-site.
For employees at Aker BP and Aker Solutions, this is an opportunity to hear from decision-makers and industry experts about the sector’s future – and to engage in the discussion about Norway’s role as an energy nation during a period of significant change.
